Cr Ngo quite right about gambling I would like to congratulate councillor Thang Ngo on his stance regarding problem gambling in the area. In the article Politics explodes meeting (Fairfield Advance, April 30), Cr Bob Watkins says that Cr Ngo is "about making a stand, kicking up a fuss and not doing anything constructive". I believe he is doing something, and thank goodness someone is taking a stand and kicking up a fuss. Cr Watkins minimises the problem and states that "the majority of people who use poker machines do so as a recreational release and not as an addiction". Cr Watkins, there are many other forms of recreational release that do not cause hardship and destroy families. While Mayor Nick Lalich says that problem gambling is a problem for state and federal governments, I believe that it also needs to be addressed at a local level. I, for one, will be attending the Southwest Sydney Problem Gambling Summit at Green Valley. Good one Liverpool Council for providing the venue and shame on Fairfield Council. Joan McNamara |
