'Gutless'
pamphlet attacks summit men Fairfield Councillor Thang Ngo and Greens council candidate Bill Cashman have strongly denied allegations of communist associations made in an anonymous pamphlet this week. The pamphlet claims to be a press release from "AVAC", Australian Vietnamese Against Communist [sic] and alleges Cr Ngo is friends with communists in Vietnam. It also calls for "all club people [to] talk against this person otherwise he win". Cr Ngo and Mr Cashman are organising an anti-problem gambling summit for next Friday, May 16. The pamphlet says the summit is being held because "communist people always against gambling" [sic]. Cr Ngo rejected all the pamphlet's claims: "None of the allegations have any basis in truth. It's just gutless and gutter politics." "To call me a communist in our community is as bad as labelling me a leper," he said. "If people have real concerns why don't they put their name to them and confront me to my face?" Mr Cashman said he was "sickened" by the campaign. "The leaflet has been sent to local clubs, political parties, newspapers and who knows who else, spreading some pretty outrageous lies and deceits, " Mr Cashman said. "Anybody that looks at our list of speakers [at the summit] will know we've been totally fair and balanced. Alienating any stakeholder will result in a half-baked outcome. "I will have no hesitation in putting this matter in the hands of the police." |
