RETIRING NOT SHY
Sunday Telegraph, 20 July 2008

Two of the State’s most high-profile councillors are bowing out of local government in September.

After nine years on Fairfield Council, independent Thang Ngo has announced he will not run for re-election.

“Cabramatta was known as a drug capital, but through lobbying the government for an inquiry into policing we’ve actually seen laws passed to help Cabramatta, and the area has changed,” Mr Ngo said.

“I’m a keen believer in renewal, and we need new voices and ideas – I’d like to see new independents.”

Waverley councillor and failed federal Labor candidate George Newhouse is also retiring from council after 13 years.

“I have joined the board of indigenous Chamber of Commerce and look forward to working towards an economically sustainable future for Aboriginal communities,” he said.
