Station fencing used as a rack
Fairfield Advance, 2 May 2007

Environmentally-savvy commuters are turning Canley Vale railway station into a "garage sale".

While bicycle-riding commuters have been commended for going green, they have unwittingly converted the fencing along the station into a temporary bike rack.

The Fairfield Advance saw bikes chained to the fence on a Friday morning.

Councillor Thang Ngo addressed Fairfield Council last Tuesday night, asking for a permanent bike lock-up to be installed.

"Some commuters using Canley Vale railway station are going green... this is a good thing," Cr Ngo said.

"However, they are tending to chain their bikes along the front fence of the station in full view of all.  Visually it's not the best look.  It is starting to look like a bit of a garage sale.

"I think the council should look at options either by ourselves or with State Rail to provide secure bike lock-ups as our way to encourage healthy and green transport alternatives."

Fairfield Nick Lalich said the council would investigate the matter.

"Council staff are now in the process of following up this matter and will respond to councillors as soon as possible," he said.
