Watch out for those turnstiles
Fairfield Advance, 25 April 07

Answering the call of nature has become a survival of the fittest at Cabramatta's Dutton Lane toilet block.

Fairfield Councillor Thang Ngo said users were injuring themselves on the entrance turnstiles.

Cr Ngo has asked Fairfield Council to consider removing the turnstiles because they are unfriendly and pose serious safety risks.

The turnstiles at the council-run block were installed when the council moved to charge users a 50c fee in a bid to ensure the toilets stayed clean, and to deter anti social behaviour.

The Fairfield Advance visited Dutton Lane last Friday and found many confused people struggling to enter the toilet block.

Cr Ngo said the turnstiles were heavy.

"The elderly really struggle to get through them because of the heavy force needed," he said.

"The fact that you can't go in and out at the same time caused further confusion. I've even saw a man trapped in teh turnstile because he was confused and tried to go out."

Fairfield Mayor Nick Lalich said the council had not received any complaints from injured community members.

"The turnstiles are used to record the number of toilet users and also to discourage anti-social behaviour from taking place in the toilets," Cr Lalich said.

"The toilets have an evacuation plan in case of an emergency and attendants at the toilets have access to a rear door for quick evacuation.

"Council is not considering removal of the turnstiles but will continue to monitor the toilets."
