Security for bikes mooted at stations

Cyclists may soon have extra security for their bikes at local stations as Fairfield Council investigates environmental parking options.

Councillor Thang Ngo wants the council to install secure bike racks at local stations after seeing bikes chained to fences at Canley Vale.

"I think this council should support green and healthy initiatives like this," he said.

"Some commuters who use the Canley Vale train station are going 'green' by riding their bike to the station to catch their train, rather than driving their car.

He said although the bikes don't look the best locked up to the fence, it did prevent people from stealing them because they were in full sight.

Mayor Nick Lalich said the council would investigate the idea and he was expecting a report next month.

He said the council was looking at ways to get more people out of cars and onto bikes as part of the Healthy Cities program.
