PARENTS and pupil at Bossley Park's Mary
Immaculate Primary School are one step closer to getting a safe pedestrian
crossing after a 12-month long campaign.
Fairfield Council has agreed to approach the RTA for funding for a
roundabout at the Barrington Street and Restwell Road intersection and to
extend the 40kmh zone to include Barrington and Garnet streets.
The council's traffic committee has allocated $50,000 in the 2007-08
budget to relocate the Restwell Road crossing and upgrade the pedestrian
refuge.
Mother-of-two Fiona Roppolo said: ''The whole school community is behind
it and now the council is as well.
''It understands what we want.''
She said the safety of the children was the most important thing but there
were still some areas that needed to be addressed as the school was not
eligible for a crossing supervisor and has not been allocated flashing
lights for its 40kmh zone.
Mrs Roppolo said: ''We've been told the crossing is unsafe for a
supervisor yet they want our kids to cross it every day.
''The zone has to be increased for the police to monitor it properly.''
She said parents would now press the RTA to ensure the improvements are
made.
Fairfield councillor Thang Ngo said the council will not be ''sitting on
its hands on this one''.
''We recognise how important this is to the community,'' he said.
''Results like this only encourage residents groups to take a more active
stance.''
The council will designate Garnet Street, outside the school, a no-parking
zone between 8am and 9.30am and 2.30pm and 4pm on school days.
The zone may be extended depending on results of a council survey.
