Council threatened

BONNYRIGG residents say they will take Fairfield Council to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) if it does not listen to their recommendations about a development in their neighbourhood.

Residents said because the council is the owner, developer and authoritative body with full control over the development, decisions cannot be made without a conflict of interest.

"If they ratify [the application] without going through our recommendations I will go to the ICAC," resident Stephen Swannell said.

The council has made a submission to put 42 houses on the block that borders Elizabeth Drive and Hamilton Road, Bonnyrigg.

Residents said the proposed estate would see traffic increased in Katinka Crescent by 2000 cars a day.

The residents called a community meeting last Saturday and invited all Fairfield councillors but only Cr Thang Ngo, an independent, attended.

Mr Swannell said he emailed all councillors at least three times and was disappointed it appeared they didn't want to hear the residents' concerns.

"I only heard back from Cr (Lawrence) White who said he couldn't attend and the mayor's secretary sent me an email saying he couldn't come as well," he said.

"It would have been nice if they had taken the time. If this development gets approved without our concerns being taken into consideration there will be a lot of unhappy people."

A decision was expected to be made on the development at last night's council meeting.

A report prepared by the Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel recommended sending the application to a town planner outside Fairfield council.

Mr Swannell said the residents originally wanted nothing built on the land but understood something would be done there.

He said they proposed a reduced number of houses [30], plus larger block sizes and an open space for children.
