Who will rid us of Dutton leak?
Fairfield Champion, 4 April

After 18 months Cr Thang Ngo said he still was left high and dry wondering why a drain in Cabramatta's Dutton Lane is still leaking.

The drain leaks water down the gutter of the busy sloping lane and creates a puddle at the end of it on Hughes Street.

It also streams down into another gutter drain.

The trail measures about 150 meters.

Cr Ngo has raised the matter at four council meetings since early 2004.

"Each time I've asked council for something to be done, I'm told it will be fixed," he said.

"It's not good enough as I have to come here and make sure it's been fixed.

"It doesn't send out the right message about Cabramatta."

The council's city services executive manager, Deborah Sandars, said the council has been investigating the source of the water leak since Cr Ngo first raised the issue and kept him informed.

"Identifying the source of the water flow is difficult as there have been periods of no water flow, intermittent flow and steady flows of clean water" she said.

"Prior to receiving Cr Ngo's Question Without Notice in August 2006, the council detected a more pronounced flow of clear water in the kerb of Dutton Lane.

"On investigation, council found the water flow was connected to a large Integral Energy electrical substation in Hill Street."

Ms Sandars said council has written to Integral Energy and is awaiting a response.

"The council needs to address the water flow issue in consultation with Integral Energy to ensure no damage occurs to electrical infrastructure when stopping the water flow," she said.

Ms Sandars said the council also found two other sources of intermittent water flow relating to the area. She said the council has written to them to ensure this does not continue.

"Water wastage is a definite concern and is being taken very seriously," she said.

"Considerable time and effort has gone into determining the source of the water flow and staff will continue investigating the matter until it is resolved."
