Question without Notice – Cr Ngo
26 June 2007 Fairfield Full Council Meeting

Mr Mayor, I have additional questions to follow up on my QWN from the last full council meeting.

They relate to Council’s policy of leasing out sports grounds and parks to parties such as local Clubs.

Can councillors be provided with a list of all Council sports grounds and parks which are let to other organisations, including the name of the grounds and the organisation that leases them and when these leases expires?

For the above can councillors get the amount payable each year?

Also what times these organisations can use the grounds under the lease agreement?  Are these times advertised or made transparent through signage on the ground?

Under the agreement, is advertising (eg billboards) allowed on Council’s sports grounds, if so, who gets this advertising revenue?

Finally, Mr Mayor, are you aware that Council’s Cabramatta Sports Ground, which is leased to Cabramatta Rugby Leagues Club is literally littered with advertising for Jim Beam Whisky, allegedly the ‘spirit of rugby league’?

Mr Mayor, this council recently unanimously supported a ban on smoking on our parks and sporting fields, because tobacco is a harmful drug.

Why are we then allowing another drug, namely alcohol to be advertised and promoted on our sporting fields, especially given there are young children playing in the junior leagues at these fields?

Will Council look at this matter as a matter of urgency, please?
