Wednesday, 20 November 2002 Media Release CR NGO CALLS ON LOCAL POLICE TO BRIEF COUNCIL ON TERRORISM Fairfield Councillor Thang Ngo has called for Fairfield and Cabramatta Police Local Area Commanders to brief Council about yesterday's terror warning from the Federal Government warning from the NSW Police Minister for Sydneysiders to be on high alert. Cr Ngo understands metropolitan police commanders, including those from Fairfield and Cabramatta were briefed by acting Police Commissioner Dave Madden on the terrorism threat this morning. It's imperative the Police brief councillors and council staff so we can take appropriate measures to protect our residents. Armed with the briefing, Cr Ngo said councillors could then asssist by disseminating relevant information, warnings and advice to the community. "At the momment, all I know is that I should be on a 'state of high alert' but to continue with my day to day life" said Cr Ngo. "What the community needs to know is what we should be looking out for and what we should do in response. Cr Ngo also expressed concern for Fairfield's muslim community. "We should all keep cool heads and the last thing we need is for Muslim-Australians to be vilified and unfairly targeted" he said. During the next few months Cr Ngo will seeking to meet with local Muslim community groups to offer his support and listen to their concerns. ENDS |
