Media Relase 28 February 2002 INDEPENDENT COUNCILLORS TO OPPOSE REZONING OF LANSDOWNE PARK Recently the Meriton Group approached Fairfield Council to discuss the potential of rezoning the current Lansdowne Caravan Park site for housing development. Cr Ngo said there was a block of independent councillors who will "oppose rezoning of the site for any housing development". Cr Heggie, Cork and Ngo were firm in their resolve. Cr Ngo challenged the 10 Labor councillors to unconditionally rule out the rezoning of the Lansdowne Caravan Park site for any housing development, both now and into the future. "Residents living on the site, and there are as many as 1,000 people affected, deserve to know they will have a roof over their head in the future " he said. According to a Herald article in February last year, Harry Triguboff's Meriton Apartments Pty Ltd was one of the largest donors to political parties giving $150,000 to the Labor Party and $100,000 to the Liberals. Cr Ngo said that Meriton has never offered to donate to his campaign and that if the company approaches him in the future, he would politely but firmly refuse. Cr Ngo said it is not known if Meriton donates to the local Labor party or other councillors. ENDS |
