NEWMAN MURDER VERDICT – COMMUNITY URGES CALM

The guilty verdict handed down for former Fairfield Councillor Phuong Ngo should not be seen as a reflection on the general Vietnamese-Australian community said Fairfield Councillor Thang Ngo, a community spokesperson.

Cr Thang Ngo, apart from sharing the same surname as Phuong Ngo, is also the only Vietnamese speaking councillor on Fairfield Council, where Mr Phuong Ngo was formerly a councillor.

"The general community needs to understand this is one person and one case and not find the whole Vietnamese-Australian community guilty" said Cr Ngo.

The Inquest and subsequent three trials have brought a fair amount of negative publicity on the Vietnamese-Australian community he said.

"Children from Vietnamese background have been taunted and teased as if their parents were criminals" said Cr Ngo.

"I’ve personally been the subject of jokes just because I share the same surname.

"Of course, the verdict is disappointing for our community which is made up of predominantly hardworking people" he said.

It is likely that the Lawyers for Phuong Ngo will appeal the decision.
