SCORING SOCCER GOALS SHOULD BE EASIER THAN SCORING DRUGS IN CABRAMATTA

A Fairfield’s anti-drugs campaigner has called on the State and Federal governments to provide much needed job and recreational facilities for young people of Cabramatta to have any chance of winning the war against drugs.

"Recently the Carr government announced a get tough initiative on drugs in Cabramatta which focussed mostly on more police and greater police powers" said Fairfield Councillor Thang Ngo.

"These are supply issues, what about looking at why drugs are so attractive to young people" he asked.

Fairfield has double the national unemployment rate and Cabramatta, which has the second highest youth population out of 27 suburbs in Fairfield Council area, has only one basketball court and two soccer fields.

Vietnam United a local youth soccer team has been unsuccessful trying to find a field in all of Fairfield to play for the past six months according to Cr Ngo.

"I pleaded in Council until we found somewhere for them. And even then, the goal posts have not been put up yet, nor have lines been drawn for the field" he said.

"What we have to do is make finding a job or playing sport easier for the young people of Cabramatta than taking drugs"

"Let’s face it, we will never be able to stop the supply of drugs coming into the country, so why don’t we look at cutting down the demand for drugs by giving kids jobs and leisure facilities and some hope for the future" he concluded.
