A fear to be faced
Sun Herald, 18 March 2001

Death threats have forced Fairfield Councillor and anti-drugs crusader Thang Ngo to think about giving up his promising political career.

The news follows revelations that the president of the area's chamber of commerce, Ross Treyvaud, has also received death threats for speaking out about poor police response times.

This extraordinary and truly horrifying state of affairs is occurring in the same area where Labor MP John Newman was gunned down in the driveway of his home.

Police commissioner Peter Ryan, who at one stage appeared to be downgrading Cabramatta's police presence under a reorganisation plan, has now sent Assistant Commissioner Clive Small, his best operational officer, into the area.  Perhaps it is time for a special task force as well.

We cannot tolerate a situation where community leaders are too afraid to speak out on issues as important as crime.
